Between Two Shores, a Fragile Hope Overturned

The Mona Passage is a stretch of water that has carried both hope and heartbreak for generations, a narrow corridor between two islands where dreams of a better life sometimes meet the unforgiving reality of the sea. On Sunday night, that passage became the site of another tragedy, one that unfolded not only from the forces of nature but from violence among those who shared the same fragile vessel.

A makeshift boat carrying an estimated sixty-two migrants capsized late Sunday near Mona Island, a small uninhabited outcrop west of Puerto Rico. By Tuesday, the U.S. Coast Guard had rescued forty-nine people and recovered at least three bodies, while continuing to search for ten others still missing . The majority of those aboard were from the Dominican Republic, with at least two believed to be from Haiti .

What happened aboard the vessel in its final hours was not merely a story of rough seas. According to Coast Guard spokesman Ricardo Castrodad, one passenger attacked others with a machete, causing severe injuries and triggering a panic that forced dozens to jump into the water . The vessel overturned shortly before midnight, and no one aboard was wearing a life jacket .

The first signs of the disaster emerged Monday afternoon when the crew of a passing motor vessel, the Tripiti, reported rescuing four people in the water and alerted Coast Guard watchstanders . What followed was a multi-agency search operation involving Coast Guard cutters and aircraft, Puerto Rico Police, Customs and Border Protection, and even the Dominican Republic Air Force . Helicopters hovered over Mona Island and the surrounding waters as rescuers combed the rocky shoreline .

Castrodad noted that the toll could have been far worse. “Everyone could have easily died,” he said, crediting the passing vessel for reporting the incident and helping rescue four people . Coast Guard video showed survivors in life jackets walking along the edge of Mona Island’s rocky outcrop, with one leaping into the water toward a rescuer as waves crashed against the shore .

The Mona Passage has long been a route for migrants fleeing poverty and violence in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, despite its notorious currents and unpredictable weather. In June 2022, eleven Haitian girls and women died when their overloaded boat capsized in open waters northwest of Puerto Rico . The passage remains what it has always been: a gamble, sometimes a fatal one, for those with little left to lose.

For the families of the missing, Tuesday brought no resolution, only the continued whir of helicopter blades and the slow sweep of search vessels. The Coast Guard said it would continue searching as long as there was reasonable hope of finding survivors. Beyond the statistics of rescued and recovered lies the quieter truth of a journey that began with hope and ended, for some, in the waters between islands.
