Between Rescue and Waiting, KM Virgo Search Enters Another Chapter Across the Waters of Masalembo Today

The sea does not leave a clear line between yesterday and today. Around the waters of Masalembo in the Java Sea, the search for passengers of KM Virgo Transport 8 continues, with rescue teams still working around the clock as the latest numbers bring both confirmed findings and unanswered questions. As of September 22, 2026, authorities reported that 126 people had been found from the vessel’s manifest of 243 people. The latest figure consists of 108 people who survived and 18 people who were found deceased. At the same time, 117 passengers and crew members remain in the search process. The numbers provide a clearer picture of the operation, but they also show how much of the incident remains unresolved for families still waiting for news. The three most recent bodies were found by divers in the waters around the sunken vessel on September 22. The victims were subsequently evacuated by the search team before being transported for further handling and identification. Their discovery increased the number of deceased victims recorded in the operation from the earlier figure of 15 to 18. The search is being carried out around the wreckage area, where divers continue examining sections of the sunken ship. The operation involves elements of the joint SAR team, including specialized diving personnel. The location and condition of the wreck remain important factors in determining how rescuers can safely continue their work. KM Virgo Transport 8 sank in the Java Sea after departing from Tanjung Perak Port in Surabaya on September 12. Reports said the vessel was traveling toward Banjarmasin when the incident occurred on September 13 amid adverse weather and high waves. The subsequent SAR operation has involved searches across the surrounding waters. For the families, however, the operation is measured not only through totals. Each additional person found represents an individual whose identity must be established and whose family must receive accurate information. The discovery of victims therefore continues beyond the physical search, because identification and notification remain essential parts of the response. The latest numbers also show that the search has progressed since the first days of the incident. Earlier reports recorded 108 survivors and six deceased among 114 people found, with 129 still missing on September 14. By September 22, the number of people found had risen to 126, although 117 people were still being sought. Search teams are continuing operations while authorities process newly recovered victims. The bodies found most recently are expected to undergo identification procedures through the DVI team in South Kalimantan. This process is intended to ensure that information delivered to families is based on verified identification rather than preliminary assumptions. For now, the operation remains open. One hundred eight survivors have been accounted for, 18 people have been confirmed deceased, and 117 remain in the search. Across the Java Sea, rescue teams continue working around the wreckage as authorities seek to establish the whereabouts and identities of those who have not yet been found.
