Between Oil and Open Roads, Argentina’s Vaca Muerta Turns Rising Production Into A New Energy Horizon

Across the broad landscape of Patagonia, the energy industry moves through a terrain of open roads, drilling equipment and distant horizons. Beneath that quiet surface lies Vaca Muerta, a vast shale formation that has become increasingly important to Argentina’s energy economy.

Argentina’s state oil company YPF reported a net profit of $1.21 billion for the second quarter of 2026, a sharp increase from $58 million during the same period a year earlier. Revenue reached $6.57 billion, up 42% year over year.

The result was supported by stronger shale production, record processing levels and higher international oil prices. YPF’s adjusted EBITDA reached $2.80 billion, an increase of 149% from a year earlier and the highest quarterly figure in the company’s history.

Shale oil production was particularly important to the result. YPF reported average shale oil production of 213,000 barrels per day, representing a 47% increase from the previous year.

The company has set its sights even higher. YPF said it aims to reach shale oil production of 250,000 barrels per day by the end of 2026, making continued expansion in Vaca Muerta central to its operating plans.

Vaca Muerta is one of the world's major unconventional hydrocarbon formations. Its development has gradually changed Argentina’s position in the regional energy landscape, creating the possibility of greater domestic production while opening wider opportunities for exports.

The growth has also encouraged YPF to increase its planned investment. On August 11, the company raised its projected 2026 investment to as much as $6.2 billion, compared with an earlier estimate of $5.8 billion. Its annual EBITDA forecast was also increased to $8 billion from $6 billion.

Higher production, however, requires more than drilling additional wells. Pipelines, processing facilities, transportation networks and export infrastructure must expand alongside the fields themselves. The business therefore extends well beyond the machinery operating directly at the drilling sites.

Natural gas presents another part of the picture. While YPF's oil production increased significantly, natural gas production declined by 6% year over year during the second quarter, showing that different parts of the energy portfolio can move in different directions at the same time.

The company's performance is being watched closely because energy exports can provide Argentina with an important source of foreign currency. Greater production creates the possibility of larger export volumes, while higher earnings give the company more capacity to invest in further development.

International oil prices also played a role in the quarter's strong performance. Commodity prices can change quickly, meaning that production growth and favorable market conditions do not always move together.

Still, the latest figures provide a clear snapshot of the scale Vaca Muerta is beginning to reach. YPF's production targets, investment plans and financial results are increasingly connected to a single geographic area that has become central to Argentina's energy ambitions.

For the company, the next stage will involve maintaining production growth while controlling costs and expanding the infrastructure needed to move hydrocarbons from the Patagonian fields toward domestic and international markets.

The second-quarter results offer a moment of strong financial performance, but the larger story is still unfolding beneath Patagonia’s wide skies. YPF is continuing to invest in Vaca Muerta, with higher production and greater export capacity remaining central to its plans for the years ahead.
