Between Inflation and Consumption: America’s August Economy Shows Softer Prices and Unexpectedly Stronger Household Spending

Economic pressure can sometimes be felt before it appears clearly in the numbers. A price at a supermarket shelf changes, a monthly bill becomes heavier, and households quietly adjust their choices. In August, the broader U.S. inflation picture offered a slightly calmer signal, even as consumers continued spending.

The Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index increased 0.3% in August, below the 0.4% rise economists surveyed by Reuters had expected. July's increase was revised down to 0.1%, according to the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis.

On an annual basis, PCE inflation was 3.4% in August, according to the corrected Reuters report. The underlying measure excluding food and energy increased 0.2% during the month, while core PCE inflation stood at 3.0% year over year.

The PCE measure is closely watched because it is the inflation gauge used by the Federal Reserve in assessing its 2% inflation objective. The August reading therefore provided another piece of information for policymakers as they consider how persistent price pressures may be.

Yet the calmer inflation reading arrived alongside a striking increase in consumer spending. Household spending rose 0.9% in August after a downwardly revised 0.1% increase in July. Since consumer activity accounts for more than two-thirds of U.S. economic output, that movement carries considerable weight in the wider economy.

The contrast is notable. Prices continued to rise, but the pace was slightly below expectations, while consumers increased their spending considerably. It suggests that households remained active even as the cost of living continued to shape the economic environment.

Earlier indicators had already shown that Americans were facing a more complicated financial landscape. Consumer confidence fell sharply in September, according to the Conference Board, reaching a level near a 12½-year low. Yet there was not, at that point, evidence of consumers broadly pulling back from spending.

The inflation data also came after changes to the methodology used by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. The agency revised calculations involving software and accessories, portfolio-management fees and legal services, and revised historical inflation data going back to 2021.

For financial markets, the softer monthly inflation figure reduced some expectations for another increase in interest rates in October. Reuters reported that market pricing for such a move had fallen after the data and comments from New York Federal Reserve President John Williams indicating that he saw no urgency for further action.

Still, the latest numbers do not erase the broader inflation challenge. Core inflation remains above the Federal Reserve's 2% objective, while energy costs and other pressures continue to influence household finances and business decisions.

August therefore leaves the American economy with two movements running alongside each other: prices rising somewhat more slowly than expected and consumers spending much more strongly. Between those two currents, the next phase of the economic story will depend on whether softer inflation can continue without weakening the demand that has supported growth.
