This week, scientists have brought one such secret into the light: remarkable dinosaur fossils uncovered in the remote heart of the Sahara Desert in Niger. The bones belong to a newly identified species of Spinosaurus, an enormous meat-eating dinosaur that walked the Earth approximately 95 million years ago during the Late Cretaceous period.

What makes this find stand out — beyond the sheer size of the animal — are the unusual features that emerged from the deep rock. The new species, now named Spinosaurus mirabilis (“the astonishing Spinosaurus”), is distinguished by an impressive scimitar-shaped crest rising from the top of its skull and a collection of interlocking conical teeth adapted for catching slippery prey. These features were so unexpected that researchers initially did not recognize the fossils for what they truly were.

The discovery traces back to expeditions led by paleontologist Paul Sereno and an international team, who first retrieved fossil fragments from a remote site in Niger in 2019 and returned in 2022 with a larger crew to unearth additional bones. Combining fieldwork with modern imaging techniques back home, the team assembled a digital reconstruction of the skull and other skeletal parts that revealed the dinosaur’s unique anatomy.

Spinosaurus mirabilis was not only large — likely measuring more than 30 feet long and weighing several tons — but its anatomy also challenges long-held ideas about how spinosaurids lived. Unlike its close relative Spinosaurus aegyptiacus, which was once thought to be fully aquatic, the new species appears to have been a semi-aquatic wader, more akin in behavior to a bird that hunted fish along riverbanks than a dolphin-like swimmer. The inland riverbed where its fossils were found supports this interpretation.

The crest itself, nearly 20 inches tall, likely served for display rather than hunting — possibly to attract mates or signal other individuals in social interactions — and may have been brightly colored in life, adding a vivid aspect to the dinosaur’s presence in its ancient environment.

For paleontologists, this discovery is more than a curiosity. It fills a gap in the evolutionary story of spinosaurids and informs how scientists reconstruct ecosystems of the distant past. The fact that this is the first new species of Spinosaurus described in more than a century underscores the enduring potential for surprising finds in Earth’s deep history.

In reflecting on the fossil, researchers have said that beneath the dry, shifting sands lie echoes of worlds we are only beginning to understand — remnant voices of animals that once walked, hunted, and lived long before humans ever walked the same planet. Yet it is through the diligence of modern science, and the patience to look closely at the smallest fragments of bone, that these stories rise again from the past.
