Between Desks and Duty: What Happens When Protectors Become Accused?

There are places so ordinary in a child’s mind — the school corridor, the classroom desk, the morning bell — that they become stitched into the very fabric of growing up. These are spaces for learning and laughter, for making friends and discovering oneself. Yet in the quiet town of Kendrapara in Odisha, those familiar hallways now carry an unsettling echo, reminding us how trust and innocence can be cruelly betrayed when the guardians of education are accused of betrayal.

In a case that has drawn widespread attention this weekend, five staff members of a private English-medium school — including four teachers and a peon — were arrested on allegations of repeatedly raping a Class VII girl student over an extended period. According to police and child welfare officials, the initial disclosure came when the girl confided in her mother about her ordeal, prompting her family to approach the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) and file a formal complaint. The committee then visited the school and urged authorities to take action, leading to the registration of an FIR and swift police intervention.

Officials said the alleged abuse reportedly took place on multiple occasions at the school premises, and that threats were made to deter the girl from speaking out. Those arrested include teachers identified by police — Chandan Kumar Prusty, Biswa Ranjan Sahoo and Rashmikanta Biswal — along with a woman teacher booked additionally on charges of abetment and concealment, and the school’s peon, Rashmi Ranjan Rana.

The gravity of the accusations has prompted authorities to assign senior officers and a dedicated investigation team, with the case being treated under the Swift Trial Initiative to expedite legal proceedings. The minor has been medically examined, and her statement has been formally recorded as part of the inquiry.

The allegations also allege that the victim’s parents had earlier reported inappropriate behaviour to the school principal — a claim the family says did not lead to timely action. School officials have said they were unaware of the full extent of the allegations until the formal complaint was lodged with the CWC.

Community responses have included meetings between local women’s groups and police, and calls for strict legal action. The investigation remains ongoing, with police and child welfare officials monitoring developments closely.

For now, the young student at the centre of this case is being supported through medical care and legal processes, even as the wider community grapples with the unsettling reality of the accusations and the trust placed in those meant to educate and protect.
