The digital world often feels weightless, but every cloud service eventually returns to something physical: buildings, electricity, cables and machines. In Indonesia, that physical foundation is expanding as artificial-intelligence computing moves deeper into Southeast Asia.
AI cloud company CoreWeave announced its expansion into Indonesia with three new data-center facilities, marking its first physical data-center presence in the Asia-Pacific region. The sites will provide a combined 360 megawatts of contracted IT power and are expected to come online in 2028.
CoreWeave plans to own and operate the computing environments across all three facilities. The company says the expansion is intended to serve AI laboratories, startups and enterprise customers that need computing resources closer to their users and data.
Location has become increasingly important in the AI economy. Large models require enormous amounts of computing power, but customers also need systems that can process information efficiently and meet requirements related to latency and data locality.
Indonesia offers a large and growing digital market. Its population, expanding internet economy and position within Southeast Asia make the country increasingly relevant to companies building regional technology infrastructure.
The three planned facilities represent a substantial commitment. A total of 360 megawatts of contracted IT power indicates the scale of computing capacity CoreWeave expects to deploy, although the facilities are not expected to become operational until 2028.
CoreWeave's move also comes amid a global race among technology companies to secure AI computing capacity. Demand for advanced processors and cloud infrastructure has grown as businesses develop and deploy increasingly sophisticated AI applications.
The company has been expanding its data-center footprint in other regions as well. Reuters reported that CoreWeave operated 49 data centers worldwide as of March and has committed significant capital toward further expansion.
Building the facilities will require more than servers. Large data centers depend on reliable electricity, cooling systems, networking infrastructure and skilled personnel. CoreWeave has also said it will build and train a local team to operate the new Indonesian facilities.
For Indonesia, the investment adds another layer to its developing AI infrastructure. Local access to powerful computing can potentially reduce dependence on distant facilities and make it easier for regional companies and institutions to develop AI applications.
The timing also reflects a wider shift in the geography of cloud computing. As AI becomes embedded in businesses across Asia, providers are increasingly placing computing capacity closer to customers rather than concentrating all infrastructure in a small number of established technology markets.
The arrival of new facilities does not mean Indonesia's AI infrastructure journey is complete. Data centers must still be built, powered and connected, while companies need skilled workers and customers capable of making productive use of the available computing resources.
CoreWeave's planned expansion nevertheless marks a notable step. Three facilities and 360 megawatts of contracted capacity place Indonesia within the company's broader global infrastructure strategy.
By the time the facilities are expected to come online in 2028, the AI landscape may look very different from today. For now, however, the construction plans represent something more tangible: the gradual arrival of physical computing infrastructure that could support the next phase of Indonesia's digital economy.
