Bernese Oberland Paragliding Flight Turns Fatal, Foreign Tourist Killed After Crash Near Interlaken

Interlaken, Switzerland— A paragliding flight over the Bernese Oberland ended in death on October 20, 2026 when a foreign tourist crashed into a steep alpine meadow, prompting a difficult recovery by mountain rescue teams.

The accident occurred around 3 p.m. near Beatenberg, a popular launch site above Lake Thun. The man, identified as a 38-year-old German national, had taken off alone from the Niederhorn area for a routine afternoon glide toward Interlaken.

Witnesses on the ground saw the canopy suddenly fold and enter a spiral. The pilot attempted to deploy a reserve parachute, but was too low. He struck the ground hard on a slope at about 1,400 meters elevation.

Two other paragliders in the air at the time reported strong thermal turbulence and gusty crosswinds. One said he heard the pilot shout before impact.

"The wind shifted very quickly. Conditions became unstable," a member of the local paragliding club said. "We warned pilots about late-afternoon thermals this time of year."

The Rega helicopter located the crash site within 20 minutes, but the doctor could only confirm death. The body was recovered by a longline operation due to the steep terrain. The wing and harness were secured for inspection.

Bern cantonal police said the victim held a valid paragliding license and had more than 100 logged flights. His equipment was relatively new and had passed annual inspection.

An investigation has been opened by the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board and the public prosecutor. They will examine weather data, flight path recordings, and equipment failure as possible factors.

The launch site remains open, but the local flight association has urged pilots to exercise extreme caution.
