Berlin Power Outage Hits 45,000 Homes After Suspected Arson Attack

In the early hours of January 3, 2026, a fire on a cable bridge over the Teltow Canal resulted in a massive power outage affecting around 45,000 households and more than 2,200 businesses in southwestern Berlin. The grid operator, Stromnetz Berlin, confirmed the details and indicated that some areas may remain without power until the evening of January 8, leaving many residents without heating during a particularly cold period.

Emergency services have reported a significant challenge as the power loss also impacted critical infrastructure, including care homes and medical facilities. To ensure the safety of vulnerable populations, residents from two elderly care homes were relocated. The widespread outage also disrupted everyday life—traffic lights were out, several supermarkets were closed, and residents faced difficulties maintaining basic services.

Officials are investigating the cause of the fire as a possible arson attack, with a letter claiming responsibility for the act. While the authenticity of this letter is being verified, some officials, including Berlin's state premier, have pointed fingers at "left-wing extremists," citing their actions as reckless and endangering lives.

As power restoration efforts continue, the authorities are calling for improved surveillance measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The head of the Berlin police union described the attack as "senseless" and highlighted the need for a proactive approach to public safety, including the installation of surveillance cameras in public areas.

Stromnetz Berlin announced that while about 7,000 households and 150 businesses saw their power restored by January 4, a vast majority will endure prolonged outages. The operator is undertaking complex repair work, as winter conditions are exacerbating the situation.

Residents affected by the outage have been advised to seek temporary shelter with friends or family or to make use of emergency accommodations as they navigate the challenging days ahead.
