Beneath Singapore’s Used-Car Market, Mileage Questions Reveal a Changing Landscape for Buyers and Dealers

A used car carries more than an engine and four wheels. It carries a history, and one of the simplest numbers buyers use to understand that history is the mileage displayed on its dashboard.

In Singapore, that number has become part of a growing consumer-protection conversation. The Consumers Association of Singapore, or CASE, received 163 complaints involving pre-owned cars during the first eight months of 2026, compared with 116 during the same period in 2025.

Of those complaints, 22 involved alleged mileage tampering, up from 17 during the corresponding period a year earlier. Buyers also reported repeated breakdowns, disputes over warranties and claims about the condition of vehicles.

Mileage matters because it can influence how buyers assess a vehicle’s condition and value. Cars with lower recorded mileage can attract more interest, while vehicles showing high mileage may take longer to sell.

CNA reported an example in which a vehicle observed during an auction appeared to have approximately 125,000 kilometers recorded. Several days later, a listing for what appeared to be the same vehicle showed mileage of about 88,000 kilometers — a difference of roughly 37,000 kilometers.

Dealers interviewed by CNA described a market where online platforms have increased price transparency. At the same time, they said profit margins have become narrower, making it harder for dealerships to earn the same amount from each vehicle.

Industry representatives said high-mileage vehicles can be more difficult to sell. That dynamic can create pressure within the market, although a vehicle’s mileage alone does not necessarily determine its actual mechanical condition.

Warranty disputes can add another layer of complexity. Some warranties exclude certain wear-and-tear components, meaning buyers may find themselves negotiating over whether a problem falls within the dealer’s responsibilities.

Singapore’s Lemon Law provides protections for consumers purchasing second-hand goods, but resolving a dispute can become more complicated when a vehicle has passed through several owners or when questions arise over who was responsible for an alleged alteration.

CASE recommends that buyers consider independent inspections and use its Standard and Functional Evaluation checklist when purchasing a pre-owned vehicle. The checklist records information such as mileage, accident history and other details provided by the dealer.

For Singapore’s used-car market, the issue ultimately returns to something simple but important: information. Behind every number on an odometer is a vehicle history, and as buyers become more attentive to that history, transparency is becoming an increasingly visible part of the transaction.
