Beneath Singapore’s Busy Streets, a Two-Year Delay Changes the Rhythm of the North-South Corridor

Road projects usually live on maps long before they become part of everyday life. In Singapore, one of the country’s largest planned transport corridors is now facing a longer journey, after construction challenges pushed its completion timeline further into the future.

The North-South Corridor has been delayed by two years and will begin opening in phases from 2029, according to Singapore’s Land Transport Authority. The revised timeline was announced after construction encountered unexpectedly difficult ground conditions.

The corridor is intended to strengthen north-south connectivity across Singapore, linking residential areas with major employment and transport centers. Its development has been closely watched because of the scale of construction required in a densely built urban environment.

The LTA said the difficult ground conditions required more complex construction methods. Working beneath existing roads, buildings and infrastructure can make large underground projects considerably more complicated than their original schedules suggest.

For businesses located along affected sections, the delay creates another period of construction activity. CNA reported that some businesses fear the prolonged works could affect their operations, while residents are preparing for additional noise, dust and changes to the surrounding streetscape.

The impact is particularly visible at street level. Construction corridors can change access routes, parking arrangements, pedestrian movement and the visibility of nearby shops. For businesses that depend on regular foot traffic, even temporary changes can become part of the daily calculation.

At the same time, large infrastructure projects are designed around long-term changes rather than only their immediate disruption. The North-South Corridor is intended to provide additional transport capacity and improve connections across the island once its different components become operational.

The revised schedule means that commuters and businesses will have to adjust their expectations. Instead of waiting for a single completion date, the project will now emerge gradually, with different sections expected to become available from 2029.

The final cost of the delay will also take time to become clear. LTA has indicated that the financial implications associated with the two-year delay can only be determined after the project is completed.

For Singapore, where infrastructure and urban movement are closely intertwined, the North-South Corridor is another reminder that the shape of a city can take years to settle. Beneath the concrete, traffic and construction barriers, a new transport network is still taking form — only now on a longer timetable.
