Beneath Istanbul’s Market Turbulence, Turkey Confronts Questions About Liquidity and Investment-Fund Structure

Turkey’s stock market has entered a period of heightened scrutiny after a sharp selloff exposed liquidity problems among several investment funds. The BIST-100 index fell more than 8% during the previous week, its largest weekly decline since March 2025, according to Reuters.

The pressure emerged after some funds encountered difficulty meeting investors’ redemption requests. Several funds had substantial exposure to stocks with relatively limited trading activity, making it difficult to raise cash quickly when investors sought withdrawals.

As fund managers attempted to meet redemption demands, liquid shares were sold to raise cash. That selling pressure spread beyond the funds directly facing liquidity problems and contributed to broader declines across the Istanbul market.

The episode has drawn attention to the structure of Turkey’s equity market. Reuters reported that the market contains a relatively small number of highly liquid large-cap companies, while ownership and trading activity can be concentrated in certain stocks. Such conditions can amplify price movements when investors suddenly seek cash.

Turkish authorities responded with several measures aimed at stabilizing financial conditions. The Capital Markets Board ordered the liquidation of 131 investment funds, while other measures included additional central-bank funding and adjustments to margin-trading rules.

The funds affected represent a substantial pool of savings. Reuters reported on September 23 that 455,758 individual investors held stakes in more than 100 funds scheduled for liquidation, with combined assets of around $18 billion.

Regulators have also expanded investigations into transactions involving several Turkish-listed companies. Authorities have detained individuals in connection with investigations into share transactions, while prosecutors examine allegations involving capital-market violations and other offenses. These remain matters under investigation rather than established findings of wrongdoing.

The market reaction has also raised questions among international index providers. Reuters reported that MSCI and FTSE Russell have expressed concerns about aspects of Turkey’s equity-market structure, including liquidity and accessibility. Such assessments can influence how international investors view a market and how easily capital can move into or out of it.

For ordinary investors, the episode illustrates the difference between owning an asset on paper and being able to convert that asset into cash during a period of stress. A fund can hold valuable securities, yet if those securities are difficult to sell quickly, large redemption requests can create pressure throughout the investment structure.

Turkey’s authorities are now dealing with both the immediate market disruption and the structural questions revealed by the episode. As regulators review funds, trading practices and liquidity arrangements, the Istanbul exchange continues to operate within a landscape where confidence and market access remain closely connected to the flow of cash.
