Beneath Indonesia’s Rural Morning, Farmers See Their Exchange Value Rise With the August Harvest

Morning arrives differently across Indonesia's agricultural landscapes. In rice fields, plantations, livestock farms, and rural markets, the first movement of the day often begins before the sun has fully risen. Behind those familiar scenes lies a set of economic measurements that follow the changing value of what farmers sell and what they must purchase.

Indonesia's national Farmer Exchange Rate, or NTP, rose to 129.19 in August 2026, increasing 1.05% from July, according to Statistics Indonesia. The indicator measures the relationship between prices received by farmers and prices paid for goods and services used by farming households.

The August increase occurred because the index of prices received by farmers rose 1.14% to 165.66. Meanwhile, the index of prices paid by farmers increased only 0.09% to 128.24. The difference between those movements resulted in the higher NTP reading.

Several commodities played an important role in the increase. BPS identified rice, palm oil, rubber, and broiler chickens among the commodities that contributed significantly to the rise in prices received by farmers during August.

For agricultural households, changes in these prices can influence the balance between revenue and expenses. When prices received increase more rapidly than the costs farmers face, the exchange relationship improves. That movement is captured in the monthly NTP figure.

The indicator is therefore more than a single number on an economic release. It reflects the movement of agricultural prices across a country where farming remains connected to both local consumption and wider supply chains.

Rice provides one particularly important example because it occupies a central place in Indonesia's food economy. Palm oil and rubber, meanwhile, connect agricultural production to industrial and international markets, while poultry links rural production more directly with domestic food demand.

The August movement also comes as Indonesia's wider economy continues to balance changes in commodity prices, household spending, production costs, and international trade. Agricultural prices can shift according to weather, supply, demand, transportation, and conditions in global commodity markets.

For farmers, those changes are experienced not through statistical tables but through the prices offered at markets and the costs encountered along the production cycle. A higher exchange rate can provide a different economic environment from one in which production costs rise more quickly than selling prices.

The August NTP reading of 129.19 gives the agricultural sector a stronger position than the previous month. As September begins, farmers and markets will continue responding to harvest conditions, commodity prices, input costs, and the broader movement of Indonesia's food and agricultural economy.
