Beneath Indonesia’s Eastern Morning Light, Flores Begins Counting the Cost of a Powerful Offshore Earthquake

The first light of day revealed what darkness had hidden. Across parts of Flores, homes stood damaged, roads were blocked, and families gathered outside buildings they no longer trusted. The powerful earthquake had passed, but its consequences remained spread across the island's towns, hills, and coastal settlements.

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck offshore near Nagekeo Regency in East Nusa Tenggara on August 15. BNPB said the epicenter was approximately 38 kilometers northeast of Mbay and about 15 kilometers beneath the sea. (bnpb.go.id)

The earthquake caused significant damage in several locations. Buildings collapsed, roads were affected by landslides, and electricity and communications were disrupted. The damage was particularly difficult to assess in communities separated by mountainous terrain.

At least 38 people were reported killed in the latest reports. Reuters said 20 deaths were recorded in Maumere, while 16 people were killed by a landslide in Reok village. More than a dozen people were injured, and approximately 2,000 people evacuated affected areas. (reuters.com)

The earthquake also produced a temporary tsunami concern. Because the epicenter was offshore, authorities issued a warning for parts of the surrounding coastline. Residents moved away from potentially exposed areas while monitoring systems assessed the movement of the sea.

The warning was later lifted after authorities determined that there was no continuing significant tsunami threat. Reuters reported that observed tsunami waves remained below one meter. The immediate concern shifted back toward the earthquake damage already affecting communities on land. (reuters.com)

For emergency teams, the terrain remained a major challenge. Landslides blocked roads across parts of Flores, including sections of the Trans-Flores highway. Rescue workers had to navigate damaged routes while attempting to reach communities where casualty and damage reports were still developing.

The Associated Press reported that helicopters and other resources were being used as part of the response. Such support is particularly important when ground routes are blocked, because isolated communities may otherwise remain difficult to reach with medical teams, food, water, and other supplies. Recovery also involves decisions that cannot be made immediately. Damaged buildings need inspection before residents can safely return, while roads must be cleared and unstable slopes monitored. Families who have evacuated may need temporary shelter while authorities determine whether their homes remain habitable.

The coming days will therefore be defined by assessment as much as rescue. Authorities continue gathering information from affected communities and restoring access where possible. Across Flores, the earthquake has left behind a landscape requiring careful examination before normal life can begin to return.
