Belgium Deploys Soldiers at Jewish Sites to Reinforce Security

Belgium implemented heightened security measures by deploying soldiers to Jewish sites, including synagogues and schools, following a wave of antisemitic attacks in both Belgium and the Netherlands. This decision was prompted by a disturbing series of incidents, notably an explosion earlier this month at a synagogue in Liege, an arson attack on a synagogue in Rotterdam, and another explosion at a Jewish school in Amsterdam.

Belgian Defense Minister Theo Francken announced the deployment, emphasizing that “safety is a basic right.” The military presence is intended to reassure the Jewish community and enhance security in areas identified as high-risk. Soldiers have been spotted guarding several key locations, including the Great Synagogue in Brussels and neighborhoods in Antwerp.

Francken stated that the deployment is taking place in three phases, starting with Brussels and Antwerp, with plans to extend to Liege. Up to 600 soldiers will be used in rotating shifts, although only 200 will be on duty at any given time. The reaction from the Jewish community has been largely positive, with leaders describing the measure as both necessary and long overdue given the heightened threat of antisemitism.

The Coordination Committee of Jewish Organizations in Belgium expressed gratitude for the military presence, highlighting that it sends a strong message regarding the protection of Jewish life. Ralph Pais, vice-chair of the committee, noted that vigilance and action are crucial for ensuring the safety of community members.

However, some local voices, like David Rosenberg from the Antwerp District Council, criticize the response as reactive rather than proactive. Concerns have been raised about the adequacy of security measures over time, especially since the increased presence typically diminishes after the immediate threat subsides.

This deployment comes amidst broader concerns about rising antisemitism globally, particularly in the wake of geopolitical conflicts affecting Jewish communities in Europe. As authorities investigate the motivations behind recent attacks, including potential links to extremist groups like Ashab al-Yamin, the urgency of providing robust security remains evident.
