Behind Closed Sauna Doors: How Warmth Turned Fatal

In the heart of Tokyo’s bustling Akasaka district, a place known for its sleek buildings and vibrant culture, an ordinary visit to a private sauna turned into an unspeakable tragedy. On December 15, Masanari Matsuda, 36, and his wife Yoko Matsuda, 37 — a beauty salon owner and a nail artist — entered a reserved sauna room for what was meant to be a relaxing break. Instead, both were later found unconscious and unable to escape from a fire that broke out inside the room, and they died from their injuries despite emergency efforts to save them.

Authorities were alerted around 12:25 p.m. local time when the sauna’s fire alarm sounded at the Sauna Tiger facility. Firefighters and police arrived to discover a room on the third floor engulfed in smoke and heat. When they forced their way in, the couple was found collapsed near the sauna door. Both were rushed to hospital but later pronounced dead.

Investigators are examining how such a blaze could turn fatal in what is usually considered a safe leisure space. Early inquiries suggest that a fire may have started when a towel inside the sauna made contact with the hot stones, igniting flames that spread quickly to the wooden bench and walls.

What has particularly alarmed police is the possibility that the Matsudas were trapped inside the room with no way to exit. Firefighters found that the wooden doorknob — the sole means of opening the sauna door — had detached completely, lying on the floor, potentially preventing the couple from getting out once the fire broke out. They also discovered that an emergency alarm button installed inside the sauna — designed to summon help — was not functioning, with the control panel allegedly switched off for years. Reports indicate the couple may have attempted to press the button as its plastic cover was broken.

The facility’s operator has expressed “deep condolences” to the families of the victims and pledged cooperation with authorities as the investigation continues. Sauna Tiger has temporarily closed the site and offered refunds to customers with reservations.

As police work to determine the exact sequence of events and whether safety lapses or equipment malfunctions played a role, the incident has raised concerns about risk management in private saunas — a growing trend in Japan where such facilities have become increasingly popular.
