The final days of summer can bring a strange stillness to a city built around movement. On Wall Street, however, the calendar is already pointing toward September, when employment figures and corporate earnings will offer new clues about the direction of the American economy.
U.S. stocks are approaching record levels after a sustained rally supported by strong corporate earnings, particularly among technology and semiconductor companies. But investors now face another test as the employment report and Broadcom’s results arrive in the coming week.
The U.S. employment report, due September 4, has become particularly important because labor-market conditions remain closely connected to expectations for monetary policy. Analysts surveyed by Reuters expect payrolls to increase by roughly 58,000, while the unemployment rate is forecast at about 4.1%.
Those numbers will arrive after an unexpectedly weak July employment reading. A stronger August report could reinforce concerns that inflation remains persistent and potentially increase expectations for higher interest rates. A softer result, meanwhile, could leave policymakers with more room to wait before making another move.
The Federal Reserve's position has already become more closely watched. Chair Kevin Warsh said Friday that policymakers would need to act if they lacked confidence that underlying inflation was returning to the central bank's 2% target. His remarks increased market expectations for a possible rate increase.
Against that backdrop, corporate earnings provide another measure of economic strength. Broadcom is scheduled to report results, offering investors another look at demand for semiconductors and infrastructure supporting artificial intelligence. Nvidia's recent forecast for approximately 70% revenue growth has already strengthened expectations for continued AI investment.
Other technology companies, including Dell and Palo Alto Networks, are also expected to report. The results come as second-quarter earnings for S&P 500 companies have shown strong year-over-year growth, providing much of the foundation for the market's current advance.
Yet the market's strength has not eliminated caution. U.S. equity funds recorded their largest weekly outflow since March, with investors withdrawing $22.33 billion in the week through August 26. Bond funds, meanwhile, continued to attract money, suggesting that some investors are positioning more defensively even as stock indexes remain elevated.
The result is a market carrying two different moods into September. Corporate earnings remain strong and AI investment continues to provide momentum, while inflation and interest-rate expectations encourage investors to look carefully at every new economic signal.
The employment report and Broadcom's results will not determine the entire direction of Wall Street on their own. They will, however, add important pieces to the economic picture investors are assembling as summer ends and the final months of 2026 begin.
