Bangladesh Home Tragedy: Gas Cylinder Blast Kills Married Couple Instantly Inside Dhaka Residence

Dhaka, Bangladesh— A residential gas cylinder explosion resulted in the immediate deaths of a married couple inside their home on October 24, 2026, after a leak ignited in a cramped kitchen in the capital's Mirpur area.

The blast occurred around 6:15 a.m. when the family was preparing breakfast. Neighbors said they heard a loud boom that shattered windows in three adjacent buildings. The kitchen wall collapsed, and flames spread to a bedroom within minutes. Fire Service officers recovered the bodies of a 38-year-old man and his 32-year-old wife from under concrete debris.

Fire officials said the couple had been using a 12-kg liquefied petroleum gas cylinder connected with a worn rubber hose. The hose had cracks near the regulator, a common fault in low-cost refills. Gas accumulated overnight in the closed kitchen. When the wife struck a match to light the stove, the room ignited.

"The cylinder was still intact, but the hose was burnt and the regulator was loose," a Fire Service and Civil Defence officer said at the scene. "We see this pattern every month. People do not check connections. Shops sell cylinders without testing." The officer said the couple's two children were at a relative's house and survived.

Neighbors tried to douse the fire with buckets before fire trucks arrived 22 minutes later. One resident said he broke a window to pull out a mattress that was burning. "Smoke was black and thick. We could not enter. We shouted their names, but there was no answer," he said. Two neighboring families were evacuated as the fire threatened to spread through a shared balcony.

Dhaka has seen a rise in domestic gas explosions as households switch from piped natural gas to bottled LPG due to supply cuts. The Energy Division estimates more than 4 million cylinders circulate in Dhaka alone, many refilled by unauthorized shops. Safety valves are often missing or tampered with. Inspectors conducted a drive last year but seized only 300 illegal cylinders.

The bodies were sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital for autopsy. The house owner said the couple had rented the one-room unit for eight months and paid 9,000 taka a month. He said the cylinder was bought from a nearby grocery store that also sells gas refills on the side.

Authorities said they will file a case against the retailer if the cylinder is found to be unlicensed. A local councilor said awareness campaigns had been held, but residents ignore warnings to save money. "A proper hose costs 600 taka. People use a 150-taka tube. That difference kills," the councilor said.

Police sealed the building and ordered other tenants to vacate until an engineering check is completed. The explosion left a hole in the second-floor slab, exposing rebar and broken pipes.

Investigators were still examining the remains of the regulator and stove late afternoon, while neighbors placed flowers outside the burnt doorway.
