Ban Phones Throughout the School Day, UK Education Secretary Tells Teachers

In a decisive move, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has instructed headteachers in England that schools must enforce a strict ban on mobile phones throughout the entire school day. This edict prohibits the devices from being used as calculators, for research, or during any break times. The directive, issued in a letter to schools, stresses that all educational environments should be free from mobile phone distractions.

Phillipson highlighted the previous guidance on mobile phone use, which she described as lacking clarity and consistency. The new guidelines were introduced to establish a clear national stance on mobile phone policies in schools. She stated, "It is crucial for schools to implement these policies consistently, applying them across all classes and at all times."

The updated regulations also includes instructions for teachers, who have been advised not to use their phones in front of students during school hours. According to data from the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, while 99.9% of primary schools and 90% of secondary schools have mobile phone policies in place, approximately 58% of secondary school students reported unauthorized phone use during lessons, which rises to 65% among key stage four pupils.

In addition to enforcing phone bans, the government is launching a consultation regarding a potential social media ban for all children under the age of 16, inspired by recent measures taken in Australia. Phillipson's initiative aims to encourage safer digital environments while ensuring that classrooms remain focused on learning.
