Baghdad Municipality Police Chief Killed, Several Officers Wounded in Thursday Attack

BAGHDAD, IRAQ — A senior police commander and another security officer were killed, and several others wounded, on Thursday during a violent confrontation in southern Baghdad. Gunmen opened fire on a joint security and municipal team enforcing an operation to clear unauthorized housing structures in the capital.

The ambush took place in the Karara area within the Al-Dora district. Members of the Baghdad Municipality Police Department and municipal workers were carrying out a court-ordered demolition of illegal buildings when unknown attackers targeted the team with heavy gunfire. The head of the Municipality Police Department for western Baghdad, a brigadier, sustained critical gunshot wounds during the initial barrage and later died at a local hospital. A second security officer was also killed at the scene, while at least four others—including federal police officers and municipal staff—suffered varying degrees of injuries.

Following the attack, the Baghdad Operations Command flooded the surrounding district with security forces, locking down major access points and deploying specialized units to hunt down the shooters. Iraqi authorities confirmed that one suspect was apprehended shortly after the raid, while sweep operations continue in neighboring areas to identify and detain remaining suspects.

Iraqi officials strongly condemned the attack, calling it a direct assault on the rule of law and state enforcement. Senior Deputy Interior Minister Hussein Al-Awadi announced that a joint intelligence and security task force has been assembled to conduct a full investigation into the incident and bring all perpetrators before the courts.

In response to the escalation, municipal authorities have temporarily halted demolition operations across southern Baghdad pending comprehensive risk assessments and updated safety protocols for field teams. City officials emphasized that while enforcing zoning laws remains essential for urban planning and public safety, future enforcement drives will require enhanced tactical support and armored escort units in high-risk zones.

Community leaders and local representatives in the Al-Dora district have called for calm, urging residents to cooperate with ongoing law enforcement sweeps and resolve land-use disputes through legal channels rather than violence. Meanwhile, funeral processions were held for the fallen officers, drawing crowds of colleagues, municipal workers, and state officials paying their respects to the slain police chief.
