Baghdad-Kirkuk Highway Crash: Bus Rollover Claims One Passenger Life And Leaves Nine Injured

Kirkuk, Iraq—A commercial passenger bus traveling at excessive speed flipped over on the main highway connecting Baghdad and Kirkuk today, killing one passenger and injuring nine others. The vehicle swerved sharply off the asphalt shoulder before rolling onto its side along the median. Debris and luggage scattered across two lanes of the primary transport corridor.

Traffic police and medical crews arrived quickly, closing down northbound lanes to allow emergency responders to extract trapped passengers. Ambulances transported the nine injured individuals to a regional hospital in Kirkuk. Medical officials confirmed two victims remain in serious condition with multiple fractures and trauma.

According to a preliminary report from the Traffic Directorate of Iraq, the driver lost control of the vehicle while attempting to overtake a commercial freight truck at high speed on a curved section of the highway. Investigators noted that worn tires and high speed directly contributed to the rollover.

"The bus started swaying side to side before hitting the gravel shoulder," said an eyewitness driving directly behind the passenger coach. "It flipped twice before coming to a stop on its side in the middle of the road."

Traffic officers detained the driver at the scene for formal questioning and sobriety testing. Heavy towing machinery was deployed to pull the overturned bus off the roadway and clear shattered glass and mechanical debris from the driving lanes.

The highway linking Baghdad to Kirkuk is one of Iraq’s busiest commercial and passenger routes, heavily used by intercity coaches and heavy transport trucks. Lack of physical lane dividers, speed enforcement, and poor road maintenance along several stretches continue to make the corridor a frequent site of high-speed collisions.

Traffic police issued renewed calls for transport companies to enforce speed-limiting devices on commercial intercity buses. Authorities emphasized that patrol units will step up radar speed checks along the highway to prevent secondary incidents.

Highway lanes were fully cleared and reopened to normal traffic flow late in the afternoon following the removal of the wrecked vehicle.
