Athens Daylight Heist Turns Violent: Two Jewelry Workers Shot as Armed Gang Flees Center

Athens, Greece— Two employees were on the floor bleeding inside a gold jewelry shop in central Athens just after midday on October 23, 2026 when armed robbers opened fire and ran.

Police said three men entered the store on a busy commercial street. They carried pistols. One stayed at the door. The other two smashed cases. Staff resisted. Shots followed. It was fast.

The wounded, a man and a woman in their 30s, worked at the shop for years. Paramedics arrived within eight minutes. Both were taken to Evangelismos Hospital. Doctors described their condition as serious but not life-threatening. One took a bullet to the shoulder. The other to the leg.

Witnesses described chaos. A delivery driver outside said he heard two loud cracks. Then shouting. People on the sidewalk dropped. A neighboring shop owner pulled his shutter down. "We thought it was construction. Then we saw men in black masks running with bags," he said.

Hellenic Police sealed the block. Forensics marked shell casings near the counter. Two casings. Possibly a third outside. The robbers left behind a hammer and a shattered display tray. Gold chains were scattered across the floor. Investigators believe they grabbed high-value items in under 90 seconds.

The store had been hit before. Not like this. Owners in the district say insurance costs have doubled. Private security is now standard. Yet most shops still rely on a single panic button and thin glass. A police source admitted response times in the center have slipped as patrols are stretched.

Detectives are pulling footage from six cameras on the street and inside the shop. The men wore hoods, gloves, dark clothing. No license plate yet from the getaway motorbike spotted turning onto Stadiou. Police issued a description: three males, average build, speaking Greek with local accent.

The robbery comes as gold prices push record highs in Greece. Shops holding more inventory become bigger targets. The Jewelers Association warned last month that armed raids were up 40% in Attica. The ministry promised more patrols. Nothing changed.

Police have not made arrests. The crime scene remains closed. Investigators will return Friday morning for a second sweep.
