At Bank Indonesia’s Jakarta Headquarters, Stability Becomes the Compass for a New Monetary Policy Chapter

Morning light over Jakarta often reveals the city through movement: traffic flowing between buildings, financial districts beginning another working day, and decisions made quietly behind glass windows. At Bank Indonesia, that rhythm has entered a new chapter following a change in leadership, with macroeconomic stability now placed firmly at the center of the institution’s immediate policy direction.

Destry Damayanti formally assumed the position of Bank Indonesia governor after being sworn in on September 2, succeeding Perry Warjiyo. She said the central bank would prioritize macroeconomic stability while continuing to calibrate policy instruments so that they could also support economic growth.

Destry described stability as an important foundation for growth, particularly as the global economy continues to face uncertainty. She pointed to an environment in which major economies are dealing with relatively high interest rates and elevated bond yields, conditions that can influence capital movements and financial markets in emerging economies such as Indonesia.

One of the immediate considerations is inflation. Indonesia’s annual inflation rate accelerated to 3.19 percent in August, rising from 2.88 percent in July, although the figure remained within Bank Indonesia’s target range of 2.5 percent plus or minus one percentage point. Food and transportation prices were among the factors contributing to the increase.

The movement in prices comes alongside a broader economic landscape that requires careful balancing. Indonesia returned to a trade surplus in July, with exports rising 6.05 percent year-on-year to $26.22 billion, while imports increased 27 percent to $26.09 billion. The stronger import figure reflected, among other things, increased fuel purchases and the continuing investment cycle.

For Bank Indonesia, the exchange rate remains another important part of that balance. External financial conditions, global bond yields and shifts in investor sentiment can affect the rupiah and domestic financial markets. Destry said these developments would be considered as policymakers assess the appropriate stance at upcoming monetary policy meetings.

Her appointment also represents an institutional transition. Destry becomes the first woman to lead Bank Indonesia, having previously served as a deputy governor since 2019. She inherits an institution facing the familiar central-banking challenge of keeping prices and financial markets stable while allowing enough room for economic activity to expand.

The new governor has also expressed support for closer coordination between Bank Indonesia and the government on economic policy, while emphasizing the importance of maintaining the central bank’s autonomy. That balance will be closely watched as Indonesia pursues investment, stronger domestic activity and greater control over strategic economic resources.

For now, the direction is relatively clear even if the path ahead remains fluid. Bank Indonesia is preparing to navigate an environment where inflation, exchange rates, bond yields, investment and growth interact continuously. From Jakarta, the task is less about choosing stability or growth than finding the point at which one can create enough space for the other.
