At an Intersection, a Life Ended and a Driver Kept Going

There is a particular kind of grief that arrives without warning, carried not by illness or time but by a single moment at an intersection. On Tuesday evening in Mississauga, a city west of Toronto, a pedestrian crossing the road became the victim of a collision that took seconds to occur and will take far longer to comprehend. The driver did not stop. The person died at the scene.

The collision happened shortly after 6 p.m. at the intersection of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Dundas Street West, a busy crossroads in the city's western section . Peel Regional Police responded to calls and arrived to find a pedestrian who had been struck by a pickup truck. Emergency personnel performed life-saving measures, but the person was pronounced dead at the scene .

The victim was later described by police as a man in his 60s, though his identity has not been released pending notification of family . Initial investigation suggests the pedestrian was in the crosswalk, moving north on the west side, when a dark-colored pickup truck traveling south on Winston Churchill Boulevard turned west onto Dundas Street West and struck him .

The driver did not remain. Police have since identified the suspect vehicle as a 1999 to 2005 model Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck, dark two-tone in color, with possible damage to the front right area—the bumper, hood, or quarter panel . Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage and dashcam video provided by the public, and Constable Tyler Bell-Morena said police have "multiple angles" of the collision .

"We're asking for is any motorists that were in the vicinity travelling in that intersection... to please have a look at that footage, retain that footage," Bell-Morena said . He also addressed the driver directly: "There's absolutely no doubt that you have hit somebody and you have killed somebody. It is a matter of time before we are knocking on your door. So seek legal advice and turn yourself into police" .

The constable described the video footage as "appalling," noting that the driver stopped only briefly, if at all, without checking on the person struck. He acknowledged that drivers may experience fear after a collision, but said that does not excuse leaving the scene. "You're a human before you are a driver, and you need to stop and make sure that you haven't hurt anybody," he said .

The investigation remains in its early stages. Police are working to determine whether the pedestrian was crossing with the signal, though Bell-Morena noted that regardless of the signal, drivers making a turn have a duty to ensure the turn can be made safely . The intersection was closed for several hours as officers processed the scene . Anyone with information is asked to contact Peel Regional Police or Crime Stoppers anonymously .
