As Artificial Intelligence Consumes More Power, Google and Constellation Connect Digital Growth With America’s Nuclear Future

The digital world can sometimes appear weightless. Information travels instantly, artificial intelligence systems process enormous quantities of data and cloud services operate far from the people using them. Yet beneath that invisible network is a very physical requirement: electricity. As AI expands, the question of how to provide enough reliable power is becoming increasingly important.

Google has signed an agreement with Constellation Energy covering 3,590 megawatts of electricity. The arrangement includes 890 megawatts from nuclear generation, connecting the growing electricity requirements of artificial intelligence and data centers with one of America's most established sources of continuous power.

The nuclear portion is covered by a 20-year power purchase agreement involving Constellation facilities in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey. Constellation plans to invest more than $4.3 billion in its nuclear fleet as it increases generation capacity at existing facilities. The first additional electricity is expected to become available in 2028.

Another 2,700 megawatts will be covered through a separate agreement involving the PJM Interconnection grid. Unlike the nuclear component, that portion is not tied to a single generation technology. Together, the agreements provide Google with a large long-term electricity framework as its computing infrastructure continues to expand.

The nuclear component is particularly significant because nuclear plants can provide electricity continuously. For data centers operating around the clock, reliability is as important as the total amount of power available. Artificial intelligence workloads can require substantial computing capacity, making dependable electricity an increasingly central part of technology planning.

The agreement comes as demand on the PJM grid continues to change. Data centers have become an important source of new electricity demand, creating questions about how the grid can accommodate large new customers while maintaining reliability during periods of high consumption.

For Constellation, Google's agreement provides another long-term customer for nuclear generation. The planned investment in the nuclear fleet also illustrates how the growth of artificial intelligence is influencing decisions far beyond the technology sector. Electricity companies are increasingly looking at data centers as major sources of future demand.

Google's move is part of a broader pattern among technology companies. Large digital businesses are seeking long-term power arrangements as AI development increases the amount of computing infrastructure they require. The relationship between technology companies and electricity providers is therefore becoming closer than it was during the earlier stages of the cloud-computing era.

There is something striking about this transition. Artificial intelligence is often discussed through software, algorithms and semiconductor chips, yet its expansion ultimately reaches into power plants, transmission networks and substations. The more capable digital systems become, the more visible their physical foundations may also become.

For Google and Constellation, the agreement represents a long-term commercial commitment. For the wider energy system, it is another sign that America's technology expansion is reshaping electricity demand. The future of artificial intelligence may be written partly inside data centers, but it will also depend on the power infrastructure standing quietly beyond their walls.
