Armed Jewelry Heist Shootout In São Paulo Kills One Guard, Robbers Flee With High Value Loot

São Paulo, Brazil— One security guard was killed Saturday when an armed jewelry heist erupted into a shootout in central São Paulo.

The robbery happened at 11:05 a.m. on October 25, 2026 at a high-end jewelry store on Rua Oscar Freire in Jardins. Four men arrived on two motorcycles, wearing helmets and vests marked as delivery workers. They entered the store with pistols drawn.

São Paulo Military Police said the guard, a 42-year-old private security contractor, drew his weapon when the men smashed a display case with hammers. He fired once. The robbers returned fire with at least eight shots. The guard was hit in the chest and head.

The men grabbed trays of watches and gold necklaces. Witnesses said they stuffed them into backpacks and ran to their motorcycles. One motorcycle failed to start. Two robbers fled on one bike, the other two ran on foot through an alley.

"The sound was like fireworks. People ran into stores," a shop owner across the street said. "The guard fell at the entrance. He tried to close the door."

Folha de S.Paulo reported the stolen goods were valued at over 800,000 reais, including Rolex watches and diamond sets imported for a weekend showcase. The store had hired two guards for the event. The second guard was in the back room at the time.

Military Police arrived in six minutes and set up roadblocks on Avenida Paulista and surrounding streets. A helicopter tracked one motorcycle to Vila Mariana, where it was abandoned. Police recovered one backpack with jewelry still inside.

The guard was pronounced dead at Hospital das Clínicas. His family said he had worked security for 15 years and leaves two children. The store owner said he had insisted on staying at the front door during high-value displays.

Investigators seized CCTV showing the robbers’ faces partially visible before masks were pulled up. Police believe the group is linked to two prior jewelry robberies in Pinheiros this year.

By afternoon the store was shuttered, glass shattered across the floor. Jewelry cases were empty. No suspects had been detained.

The investigation remains open.
