Bend, United States— A 16-year-old boy shot through a locked door at Silver Rail Elementary School on Oct. 15, 2026 and killed three children and a teacher inside a special-needs classroom.
The attack began just before 1 p.m. Police said emergency dispatchers received a call at 12:59 p.m. PDT from a person in a vehicle who reported being shot at multiple times by someone with a long gun.
Within minutes, dozens of calls reported the shooter had entered the school in central Oregon. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m. and moments later an officer reported the shooter had been killed inside.
Police Chief Mike Krantz said at a Thursday evening press conference the gunman was stopped by two people inside. A teacher tackled him and an armed bystander who had pursued him into the school shot him dead.
The victims were identified by age: children aged 5, 8 and 11, and one teacher. Two other people — a 7-year-old student and a 54-year-old teacher — were taken to hospital with critical injuries, police said.
The bystander has not been publicly named. Recordings of 911 calls released by authorities included a dispatcher saying he was possibly a father of a child at the school. Governor Tina Kotek said at the press conference the bystander "heroically intervened to stop further loss of life."
Investigators on Oct. 16, 2026 said they were still trying to determine why the teenager carried out the attack and how he obtained the weapon. CBS News, citing unnamed law enforcement officials, reported the attacker used a shotgun that his mother had purchased.
Bend police did not immediately confirm the ownership detail. Officials said the suspect, a Bend resident, has not been publicly identified because of his age. It was not clear if he had any prior connection to the 450-student elementary school.
Silver Rail Elementary has about 40 staff members and serves kindergarten through fifth grade. The district closed the school Friday as detectives processed the classroom and reviewed video and witness accounts.
As of Friday afternoon, police said the weapon had been recovered and the scene was secured, but no motive had been established and questions about access to the long gun remained unanswered.
