Arizona Complex Blaze, Two Dead In Overnight Apartment Fire, Dozens Displaced After Evacuation

Mesa, United States— Fire alarms woke a three-story apartment complex in Mesa just after 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, and within minutes flames had swallowed two ground-floor units, killing two residents inside.

Neighbors said they heard popping sounds before smoke filled the hallway. The first 911 call came from a second-floor tenant who saw fire pushing out of a kitchen window. Engine crews arrived in under six minutes to find heavy fire already venting through the roof line.

Two victims were found inside adjacent units during a primary search. Fire command confirmed both were dead at the scene. Their ages and identities have not been released. Six other residents were evaluated for smoke inhalation and two were transported to a local hospital in stable condition.

"Smoke was banked down to the floor. We made entry on the east side, got one victim, then had to back out when the ceiling started to drop," Battalion Chief Dave Hollister said. Crews then switched to defensive operations to keep fire from jumping to the next building.

The blaze was marked under control by 4:05 a.m. Damage estimates show four units destroyed and eight more with smoke and water damage. About 30 residents were displaced. Property management opened a clubhouse as a temporary staging area before the Red Cross arrived.

The fire marshal’s office is leading the cause investigation. Early focus is on a kitchen area in one of the destroyed units. Investigators said there was no immediate sign of foul play but have not ruled out electrical failure or unattended cooking.

"These are lightweight construction buildings. Fire moves fast in the void spaces. Working smoke detectors saved a lot of people tonight," Hollister said. He noted several units had detectors that had been removed or had dead batteries.

Residents gathered in the parking lot as dawn broke, some carrying pets and small bags. The apartment management said it would provide short-term housing assistance and a list of salvage procedures.

The county medical examiner will determine cause of death. The fire marshal expects a preliminary origin report within 72 hours, pending lab tests.
