In a significant crackdown on wildlife trafficking, Argentine authorities have seized more than 700 marine animals that were illegally shipped from Kenya. This operation took place at Ezeiza International Airport near Buenos Aires on April 26, 2026, and involved collaboration among the Environmental Control Brigade, customs officials, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW), and the rehabilitation group Fundación Temaikèn.

The shipment included a variety of tropical marine species highly sought after for aquariums, such as surgeonfish, pufferfish, lionfish, butterflyfish, octopuses, crabs, and starfish. Many of these animals suffered severely during the 120-hour transit, with numerous deaths reported and survivors exhibiting significant stress and shock.

Due to the scale of the operation, Fundación Temaikèn quickly activated an emergency response plan to rehabilitate the surviving animals. Staff spent over 28 hours stabilizing these creatures, making necessary modifications to their facilities with ten additional tanks specially equipped for tropical marine life.

Cristian Gillet, the wildlife director at Fundación Temaikèn, expressed concern over the condition of the animals, noting that many had been extracted from fragile reef ecosystems and arrived at the brink of survival after spending extended periods in transport bags.

Wildlife trafficking experts warn that the global market for ornamental marine species is on the rise, with increased demand putting immense pressure on marine ecosystems. Christian Plowman from IFAW described this seizure as indicative of an organized and industrialized crime network, stressing that transporting such a large number of animals across international routes requires extensive coordination.

This incident marks the third significant seizure at Ezeiza International Airport within a year, suggesting the development of established trafficking routes. Authorities are continuing their investigation into the perpetrators behind this shipment, although no arrests have been reported thus far.

The seized animals currently remain under specialized care as Argentine officials deliberation on their long-term fate, amid ongoing concerns about the impact of wildlife trafficking on biodiversity and conservation efforts.
