Arctic Ambition: Equity Talk in Greenland’s Rare Earths Game

There are moments when raw earth and raw ambition draw close in the same place—and Greenland is fast becoming one of those places. The U.S., keen to reshape its supply chains, now eyes a piece of one of the Arctic’s richest deposits of rare earth minerals.

Trump administration officials have held talks about acquiring an equity stake in Critical Metals Corp, the developer behind the Tanbreez deposit in Greenland. The discussion involves converting a previously proposed $50 million Defense Production Act grant into an ownership share. (Reuters)

The equity stake under consideration would represent roughly 8 percent of the company, assuming the grant is converted. The Tanbreez project, already owned by Critical Metals, holds large reserves of rare earths, along with gallium and tantalum. The mine is projected to cost about $290 million to bring into production by 2026, at which time it could produce about 85,000 metric tons of rare earth concentrate annually. (Reuters)

In addition to the potential equity conversion, U.S. officials are considering a major loan from the U.S. Export-Import Bank to support development of the mine. Despite these developments, the discussions are not finalized, and several sources emphasized that nothing is “close” at this time. (Reuters)

Rare earths are critical inputs in everything from high technology to defense—magnets, batteries, vehicle motors, and more. For the U.S., reducing dependence on foreign processors (especially China) is a major strategic goal. Tanbreez, with its geographic and resource advantages, fits squarely into that aim—but development faces challenges ranging from logistical access in Greenland’s remote terrain to environmental and regulatory hurdles.
