“Appointment Television in a Streaming Age: Bloys Channels ‘The Pitt’ Model”

Casey Bloys, CEO of HBO and Max content, says he’s “not concerned” about Warner Bros. Discovery’s potential sale, preferring to focus on programming. He confirms Harry Potter Season 1 is filming and Season 2 is being written, aiming to minimize gaps between seasons. He champions The Pitt’s 15-episode, annually returning format as a blueprint for Max originals, favoring weekly releases to build habitual viewing and maximize storytelling.

“Appointment Television in a Streaming Age: Bloys Channels ‘The Pitt’ Model”

Bloys’ calm is not accidental. On the day when Warner Bros. Discovery was officially entertaining bids, he told his team and reporters alike that he is “not concerned” about the company’s future or his place in it. For Bloys, there’s little value in speculating about who might buy the company. “All of that theoretical … it’s kind of a waste of energy … the process takes a year, year and a half to close,” he said, noting that much is out of his hands. He would rather look forward, he said, to continuing to build HBO and Max’s legacy, a legacy he says he’s “very proud” of.

At the same time, Bloys offered a rare update on HBO’s long-anticipated Harry Potter TV adaptation. According to him, Season 1 is currently filming in the U.K., while the writers are already working on Season 2. He admitted that they might not snap straight from one season into the next, but he promised that they’re doing everything they can to minimize the gap — for both the cast (especially the young actors) and the audience. Bloys recognizes how big the show is, with its effects and scale, but his priority remains creating sustainable production rhythms so the series doesn’t feel disjointed.

Behind this, though, is a broader philosophy that informs his programming strategy. Bloys says Max originals now have a clearer identity — they’re not just prestige projects, but cost-efficient, high-quality series with recurring cadence. The model he highlights is The Pitt — an Emmy-winning medical drama with 15 episodes in its first season, telling a single, intense day in a Pittsburgh ER. For Bloys, this is part of a deliberate effort to deliver “52 weeks of new programming a year” by having shows that return regularly.

He argues that this kind of show requires a different creative mindset. Rather than crafting eight-episode prestige arcs, you need writers and producers who can envision 15 hours: recurring characters, episodic structure, and a “world that generates the story,” as he put it. That world-building skill, he notes, is rarer now because many creators have been trained on shorter, limited-series formats.

This strategy also aligns with how Max releases episodes. Bloys defends the weekly rollout model — yes, instead of dropping a whole season at once — because it stretches out the life of a show, gives it room to “marinate” in the audience’s mind, and helps build word-of-mouth. Financially, he argues, it also makes sense: “there’s a big difference between dropping a new series every week and a new episode.”
