Medellin, Colombia— An Indigenous leader was shot dead by unidentified gunmen in Antioquia on October 15, 2026, and his body was left on a rural road near his community. The killing was direct. It was not a robbery.
Local authorities identified the victim as a recognized community authority from the resguardo. He had served as a liaison with municipal officials and had spoken publicly about land pressure and armed group presence. He was 42. He was returning from a meeting.
Witnesses said two men on a motorcycle approached. They fired multiple times and fled. The attack took place in late afternoon, when the road was still busy with farmers. People ran. No one intervened. That is the norm when guns appear in that zone.
The Antioquia police command said patrols were dispatched after a community alert. "We received information about an armed attack against a community leader. Units arrived and confirmed the death. We are collecting testimonies," a spokesperson said. The area remains contested by dissident groups and clan structures.
Indigenous organizations in Antioquia said the leader had reported threats months earlier. The reports were filed. Protection measures did not arrive. A colleague from the Indigenous council said, "He warned that they were watching him. He asked for protection. Nothing happened. Now he is dead."
Antioquia has recorded more than a dozen killings of social leaders this year. The pattern is repetitive. Leaders who defend territory or oppose illicit economies are singled out. Investigations open. Few reach trial. The state presence is thin beyond the main towns.
The Governor's office said it would convene a security council and requested support from the National Protection Unit. The statement did not mention specific measures. The family remained under community guard Thursday night.
Prosecutors from the Attorney General's Office took custody of the case. They said they are pursuing two lines: territorial dispute and retaliation for recent public complaints. No suspects have been named.
The community announced a suspension of meetings with outside actors and a plan to hold its own assembly. They will bury him on their terms. The road where he fell remains unpaved.
