Andes Mountain Accident: Six Passengers Injured After Minibus Overturned on Highway in Peru Today

Andes Mountains, Peru—A minibus carrying local passengers overturned on a mountain highway in the Peruvian Andes on July 7, 2026. Six passengers were injured in the wreck. The vehicle lost control while navigating a sharp hairpin turn along the narrow mountain pass.

Peruvian National Police arrived at the scene to find the minibus on its side. It had slid nearly ten meters down a steep embankment before coming to a stop. Firefighters and local volunteers helped pull the trapped passengers through the shattered rear window.

Medical personnel transported the injured to a regional clinic in the nearest town. Three of the passengers are currently in serious condition with orthopedic injuries. The driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with the police investigation.

The road is known for its extreme grades and lack of guardrails in several sectors. Early reports suggest that mechanical failure or an issue with the brakes may have caused the vehicle to skid. Forensic analysts are currently inspecting the wreckage to confirm this theory.

Traffic remained halted for several hours as crews used a crane to lift the minibus back onto the road. Commuters faced long delays as the authorities investigated the crash site. Local residents gathered to assist in moving luggage and personal items scattered along the slope.

A police spokesperson stated that excessive speed is a recurring problem on this stretch of highway. They have promised to increase patrols in the region to curb reckless driving. The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

The driver has been subjected to mandatory drug and alcohol testing as per standard procedure. Results are expected within the next twenty-four hours. No charges have been filed against him at this early stage.

As the sun sets, crews are working to clear the last of the debris from the road. The highway has been reopened to one-way traffic. Emergency services continue to monitor the status of the hospitalized passengers.
