Amman Highway Accident: Fuel Tanker Overturns on Major Route Causing Fatalities and Traffic Gridlock

Amman, Jordan—A heavy fuel transport tanker overturned on a major multi-lane highway outside Amman early Tuesday morning, skidding across concrete barriers before bursting into flames upon impact. The violent crash blocked all inbound and outbound lanes, sending thick columns of black smoke billowing into the clear morning sky above the transport corridor.

Highway patrol units and civil defense squads rushed to the scene within minutes, establishing a wide exclusion perimeter to keep trapped motorists away from the burning wreckage. Firefighters deployed high-pressure foam cannons to suppress the volatile fuel fire that consumed the tractor cab and a significant portion of the tanker chassis.

Medical response teams confirmed multiple fatalities at the site, pulling victims from the crushed wreckage as forensic units began their preliminary investigations. Traffic police diverted thousands of commuter vehicles onto narrow secondary access roads, creating massive gridlock that stretched for miles across the surrounding metropolitan outskirts.

"We heard a deafening screech of sliding metal followed by a massive fireball that engulfed the entire roadway within seconds," said motorist Tariq Al-Mahmoud while waiting behind police roadblocks. Heavy tow cranes arrived by midday to lift the charred tanker shell off the asphalt, allowing municipal cleaning crews to sweep up hazardous debris.

Environmental health inspectors monitored air quality levels near nearby residential neighborhoods to ensure toxic smoke fumes did not pose immediate health hazards. Transport ministry officials announced an immediate technical audit of commercial vehicle weight limits and safety compliance standards following the disaster.

Investigators from the public security directorate examined skid marks and mechanical components scattered across the lanes to determine whether brake failure or excessive speed caused the rollover. Wreckage clearance operations continued through the afternoon, leaving the damaged highway section closed to normal commercial traffic.
