A major shift toward digital payments is taking shape in Japan as AZ-COM Maruwa, one of Amazon’s largest delivery partners in the country, prepares to pay thousands of drivers using a yen-backed stablecoin known as JPYC. The initiative is expected to cover approximately 2,300 carriers and independent delivery operators, making it one of the largest stablecoin payroll programs launched by a private company in Japan. The project represents a significant step in the integration of blockchain-based financial systems into everyday business operations. Stablecoins are designed to maintain a fixed value by being linked to traditional currencies, allowing users to benefit from digital payment efficiency without the volatility commonly associated with cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. Supporters believe stablecoin payroll systems can reduce settlement delays, lower transaction costs and improve financial accessibility. Workers may gain faster access to earnings while businesses can streamline payment infrastructure. The move also demonstrates how blockchain technology is increasingly being adopted for practical commercial use cases beyond trading and speculation. Japan has emerged as one of the more progressive jurisdictions regarding digital asset regulation. If the program proves successful, it could encourage additional companies to explore stablecoin-based compensation systems, potentially accelerating adoption of tokenized payments across the broader economy.
