Airstrike in Rakhine State Leaves Dozens Dead as Myanmar Crisis Deepens

KYAUKTAW, MYANMAR — In one of the deadliest aerial bombardments in western Myanmar in recent months, a Myanmar military fighter jet launched a devastating strike on a crowded wholesale market in Rakhine State, killing at least 49 people and injuring dozens more.

The attack occurred around midday in Kyauktaw, a riverside town situated approximately 210 miles west of Mandalay. Local rescue workers and officials from the Arakan Army—the powerful ethnic armed group controlling the territory—reported that the jet dropped two bombs directly adjacent to the bustling commercial area and a nearby bridge. The strike transformed the regional trade hub into a scene of chaotic destruction, setting surrounding structures ablaze and leaving at least 58 people wounded, with 22 in critical condition.

The bombing marks a sharp escalation in the military junta’s campaign against anti-coup resistance forces and ethnic armed factions across the country. Kyauktaw lies far from current active frontlines, making the targeting of a civilian center particularly shocking to local community leaders.

"This is one of the most severe airstrikes in Rakhine," said Wai Hun Aung, a senior local rescue official coordinating emergency relief at the scene. The wholesale market served as a critical lifeline for the entire region, where food shortages have already reached alarming levels due to military blockades on trade routes.

The military junta has not publicly commented on the casualty figures from the Kyauktaw strike, though it routinely maintains that air operations strictly target anti-regime combatants and terrorist infrastructure.

The humanitarian crisis in Rakhine State has intensified dramatically since November 2023, when the Arakan Army broke a fragile ceasefire and launched an offensive against central regime forces. Since then, the ethnic armed group has successfully seized control of 14 out of the state’s 17 townships, severely weakening the junta's territorial hold in western Myanmar.

With ground troops suffering repeated setbacks across multiple fronts nationwide, the military junta has increasingly relied on air superiority—leveraging heavy bombardments on civilian areas held by opposition forces.

Following the attack, representatives from the Arakan Army vowed swift retaliation against those responsible for targeting civilians. As regional tensions mount and aid workers struggle to treat the critically injured, international observers warn that the spiraling conflict risks pushing Myanmar’s humanitarian emergency to a breaking point.
