Airstrike Horror: Five Dead, 14 Wounded as Myanmar Junta Bombs Arakan Army-Controlled Town

TAUNGUP TOWNSHIP, MYANMAR — Bloodshed spilled into the early morning hours in southern Rakhine State after a Myanmar military junta aircraft dropped multiple payloads on a civilian area in the town of Ma-ei.

The unexpected air raid left five civilians dead and 14 others injured, including a local Buddhist monk, fueling international outcry over the military’s sweeping use of aerial bombardment against territories governed by ethnic resistance groups.

According to local emergency workers and residents, the attack took place at approximately 6:00 AM on Sunday, July 19, 2026 catching the town entirely by surprise. Witnesses reported hearing the distinct roar of a junta fighter jet cutting through the low clouds before two massive explosions tore through a residential cluster and a local monastic compound.

Ma-ei town, located in the strategic Taungup Township, has been under the operational control of the Arakan Army (AA) following heavy regional fighting. Because there were no active frontline clashes happening in the immediate vicinity at the time, residents did not anticipate the sudden strike.

The heavy ordnance tore through densely built wooden and concrete structures, reducing homes to splinters and sending shrapnel cutting through the neighborhood. Emergency teams confirmed that five civilian residents, whose identities are still being verified due to the chaotic aftermath, died instantly under collapsing rubble or from blast trauma.

Among the 14 individuals rushed to makeshift medical clinics was an elderly Buddhist monk who sustained severe lacerations and burn injuries when a blast wave hit his monastery. While three of the wounded remain in critical condition, the strike caused catastrophic damage to surrounding civilian infrastructure, leveling at least four homes and severely defacing local religious property.
