Africa CDC confirms Marburg case in Uganda as Ebola outbreak rages

Africa CDC has confirmed a Marburg case in Uganda while authorities continue responding to a broader Ebola outbreak in the region, according to outbreak updates shared by public health officials.

The Ebola situation is being caused by Bundibugyo virus disease (BVD) and is evolving with ongoing cross-border transmission and challenges that include insecurity and difficulties with isolation, care/referral systems, and contact tracing. WHO has reported that case and death totals have continued to rise, with transmission concentrated in parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and with confirmed cases also reported in Uganda. World Health Organization (WHO)

In the wake of the confirmation of Marburg in Uganda, public health messaging is expected to emphasize surveillance and infection-prevention measures for suspected viral hemorrhagic fevers, including appropriate testing pathways that can differentiate Marburg from Ebola and other high-consequence pathogens. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Africa CDC and national health authorities are continuing response efforts across the affected areas, including laboratory confirmation, rapid response capacity, deployment of medical supplies, and community engagement, while monitoring for further spread.
