AFL trade period live: Swans won't deal banned star to key rival.

There is a particular awkwardness in the machinery of professional sport when a player's future becomes entangled with the very club he is contracted to—a standoff where loyalty, leverage, and self-interest all pull in different directions. In the AFL trade period this week, that awkwardness has found its center in Sydney's Nick Blakey, a star defender whose relationship with the Swans has deteriorated to the point where rival clubs are circling.

Sydney is open to trading Blakey—even for as little as one top-15 pick—but they will not trade him to his preferred destination of Geelong. The Swans see the Cats as a fellow premiership contender and do not want to hand them one of the game's best players at a discount, according to leading reporter Tom Morris .

Blakey, 26, was one of five Swans players suspended by the club for the remainder of the 2026 season in August following an alleged incident at the Pullman Hotel in Melbourne. A woman reported a sexual assault; reports accompanying the suspensions stated none of the five players had been accused of sexual assault .

Blakey has not formally requested a trade, but rival clubs are aware he is considering a move. AFL.com.au's Cal Twomey reported that Blakey "has not given up on seeking a trade out of Sydney" and that clubs are doing work in the background. Geelong remains his preferred destination .

The Swans have publicly maintained that Blakey will remain. "We've had no indication from Nick or his management about that. Nick has five years to run on his contract, so we expect him to be back at the club next year," said list strategy chief Chris Keane on Monday .

But the situation is more fluid than the club's public stance suggests. North Melbourne has expressed interest, with list boss Brady Rawlings noting that Blakey's father, John, played 224 games for the club. "I'd hope we'd be an option for him if he decided that he really wanted a trade," Rawlings said. "If a trade request comes, no doubt we'll be trying to get involved" .

Any club entertaining a trade for Blakey will be aware of the risks. He remains part of an ongoing police investigation, and the due diligence any suitor can perform is limited while that investigation continues. There is also the question of public perception—the scandal may follow Blakey wherever he goes .

For Sydney, the calculus is difficult. Blakey is contracted until 2031 on a deal reportedly worth more than $1 million per season. Letting him go for a single draft pick would represent a significant loss. But keeping a disaffected player could be worse. For now, the standoff continues, and the trade period has its biggest story still unresolved .
