Across the Waves and Through Tension: How the U.S. Took a Venezuela-Linked Tanker

In a rare and significant maritime operation, the United States has seized a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic after a pursuit lasting more than two weeks, marking an escalation in Washington’s enforcement of sanctions tied to Venezuelan oil.

The vessel, identified as the Marinera — formerly known as Bella 1 — had been under U.S. sanctions since 2024 for allegedly transporting Venezuelan and other sanctioned oil. According to U.S. officials, the tanker initially evaded interception by the U.S. Coast Guard in Caribbean waters last year and then fled across the Atlantic, rejecting boarding attempts and changing its registration to Russia in an apparent attempt to avoid seizure.

The operation in international waters was carried out by the U.S. Coast Guard, backed by U.S. military forces, under authority of a federal warrant after tracking the tanker’s movements for weeks. The tanker was intercepted between Iceland and the waters south of Northern Europe, and U.S. forces successfully boarded the vessel without reported armed confrontation.

Officials have described the seizure as part of a broader “maritime blockade” aimed at enforcing U.S. sanctions on Venezuela’s oil exports — sanctions that Washington says are meant to pressure the Maduro regime and disrupt networks it alleges are used to evade international controls. This action comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and both Venezuela and Russia, with Russian naval forces reportedly shadowing the pursuit and previously expressing diplomatic objection to the U.S. activity.

The tanker’s seizure may further inflame geopolitical friction, as it is the first notable U.S. attempt in recent memory to seize a Russian-registered vessel at sea. Washington has also warned that other sanctioned tankers attempting to evade blockades will face similar actions.

The crew’s fate and the eventual legal disposition of the tanker — including potential prosecution for sanctions violations — have not been fully disclosed by U.S. authorities. The incident underscores complex overlaps between sanctions enforcement, maritime law, and international diplomacy.
