Across Tables and Time, the Pulse of Hospitality Finds Its Rhythm in Natasha Sideris

There is a kind of hum that never quite leaves a kitchen—the gentle susurration of pans, the soft footsteps of servers threading between tables, the unending murmur of conversation that feels like wind passing through quiet grass. For Natasha Sideris, that hum has been a constant companion, flowing through her life for more than three decades, quietly shaping both her rhythm and her resolve.

She remembers, perhaps with a nostalgic tremor, the raised wooden platform her grandfather built beneath a walnut tree in Johannesburg, where childhood meals became shared joy. It was there, amid laughter and the scent of simple family dishes, that an early lesson seeped into her bones: food is more than nourishment—it is connection. That lesson would carry her into a world defined by kitchens and tables, menus and moments, and a belief that the heart of hospitality is, above all, human.

In 2005, with a mix of hope and audacity, she opened her first café in Atholl Square, borrowing money that could have changed everything if she had failed. That café, which she almost did not name after herself, became the seed of Tashas Group. What began as one humble venue has flourished into a constellation of 45 restaurants across five countries—spaces where décor, food, service, and spirit intertwine in ways that feel both familiar and fresh.

But success did not make the work lighter. Long hours remain inseparable from the vocation she chose, and challenges—some visible, some hidden in the unpredictable dance of people and plates—continue to shape her days. Paris and London, Cape Town and Dubai, each city holds its own tastes and tempos, yet the constant pulse remains: feed, serve, host, repeat. The hospitality business, she often reflects, carries no guarantees. Its alchemy depends on people—staff, patrons, partners—and on the unpredictable ebb and flow of life itself.

Even as global events ripple outward—from economic pressures to geopolitical tensions that touch regions where her restaurants nestle—she speaks with a pragmatic optimism. There is work to be done, adjustments to make, and the creative spark to sustain. In the intimacy of well‑designed interior spaces or amid the clatter of a lively dinner service, she sees continuity in the act of gathering, of sharing good food and gracious welcome.

In quieter moments, she acknowledges the toll such a life takes. Yet, for someone who grew up watching her father tend to his own restaurants, and who felt the lure of the dining room floor even while studying psychology, there is something indelible about the rhythm of this world. It is not a path marked by ease, but by encounter—between strangers and friends, between ingredients and intention, between the promise of a meal and the promise of memory.

Natasha Sideris has spent more than thirty years in the restaurant industry and remains deeply involved in the hospitality business she built from the ground up. The Tashas Group now operates dozens of venues in South Africa and internationally, and Sideris continues to navigate both the joys and challenges of the work she loves.
