Across Malaysia’s Technology Landscape, Semiconductor Ambitions Move Beyond Assembly Toward Higher-Value Innovation

For decades, Malaysia’s semiconductor story has been written largely inside factories, where chips are assembled, tested and prepared for markets around the world. Now another chapter is emerging, one that reaches deeper into design, advanced packaging, artificial intelligence and homegrown intellectual property.

Malaysia already accounts for about 13% of global semiconductor assembly, testing and packaging activity. The country is now seeking to move further along the value chain, using its established manufacturing ecosystem as a foundation for higher-value technology development.

Recent investment activity illustrates that transition. Malaysian deep-tech startup nanoSkunkWorkX recently raised US$2 million in seed funding from regional venture capital firm Tin Men Capital, marking the firm's first investment in a Malaysian startup. The company is developing advanced materials for semiconductor packaging and AI chips.

Its technology focuses on the interfaces between components, where heat, electrical current and signals move through advanced devices. Managing those physical limitations has become increasingly important as AI chips become more powerful and generate greater amounts of heat.

The movement is also visible in chip design. Malaysian companies such as SkyeChip and Oppstar are developing indigenous integrated-circuit capabilities, while GreatAsic has attracted regional venture funding for custom ASIC and AI system-on-chip development.

International companies are also expanding their presence. MKS, a US-based technology company serving the semiconductor manufacturing industry, opened a new facility in Penang with an investment exceeding US$94 million, with the completed project expected to support more than 1,000 jobs.

The investment landscape is being reinforced by Malaysia’s effort to develop engineering talent. McKinsey reported that around RM100 billion of foreign direct investment had entered Malaysia’s semiconductor sector over the preceding two years, while an initiative to upskill 60,000 engineers was progressing through its training pipeline.

Selangor is also positioning itself as an important center for the next stage of the industry. Its upcoming AI and Semiconductor Summit will bring together global chipmakers, Malaysian technology companies, investors and government agencies, with chip design, AI infrastructure and talent development among the central themes.

The transition will not be simple. Advanced chip design requires specialized engineers, substantial research spending, access to intellectual property and close relationships between universities, technology companies and manufacturers. Moving from established assembly operations toward those activities involves a different level of technological and commercial competition.

Still, the direction is becoming clearer. Malaysia is attempting to transform its long experience in semiconductor manufacturing into a broader ecosystem capable of designing, developing and commercializing technologies of its own.
