Across European Roads, Tesla’s Safety Data Meets A New Question About Supervised Driving Technology

Across Europe’s long network of highways and city streets, the movement of traffic is becoming increasingly intertwined with digital systems. Cars now carry cameras, sensors, processors, and software capable of assisting drivers through moments that once depended entirely on human hands. Tesla has placed new safety data before European regulators as the company seeks broader acceptance of its supervised Full Self-Driving technology.

Tesla said its FSD system recorded fewer collisions than manually driven Tesla vehicles across five European countries. The company based its comparison on more than 100 million kilometers of driving data collected between April and August 2026.

According to Tesla’s figures, vehicles using the supervised FSD system were involved in three highway collisions and nine collisions on non-highway roads during the period. The company compared those figures with 137 highway collisions and 490 non-highway collisions involving manually driven Tesla vehicles.

The countries included in the analysis were the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, and Lithuania. These countries have been among the European markets where Tesla’s supervised driving technology has received provisional approval, allowing the company to gather additional information from real-world operation.

Tesla has also introduced an open-source safety dashboard as part of its effort to provide greater visibility into the data surrounding the technology. The company presents the figures as evidence that supervised FSD can potentially reduce collision rates compared with manual driving under the conditions included in its analysis.

Yet road safety statistics often carry several layers beneath the headline numbers. The type of road, traffic density, driver behavior, weather, distance traveled, and method of comparison can all affect how collision data should be interpreted. For regulators, examining those underlying factors is part of assessing whether technology performs consistently across different environments.

The European regulatory process is moving toward a broader decision on Tesla’s supervised driving system. The Netherlands granted provisional approval in April, with Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, and Lithuania subsequently following. A wider European decision could determine how the technology is permitted to operate across additional markets.

For Tesla, such approval would open another significant market for its advanced driver-assistance technology. For European regulators, the process is focused on determining how systems that can steer, accelerate, and brake while requiring human supervision should be evaluated within existing safety frameworks.

The discussion therefore continues along the same roads where the technology is being tested. Tesla has presented its latest safety figures, while European authorities continue examining the available evidence and the conditions under which supervised driving technology could operate more widely across the continent.
