Across American Skies, Electric Air Taxis Move Closer to a Future Written Above the City

Cities have always pushed transportation forward. Roads widened, railways descended underground, and airports rose beyond the edges of urban life. Now another possibility is gathering above the streets, where electric aircraft could eventually carry passengers through the air rather than along crowded roads.

Joby Aviation, the electric air-taxi company, said Tuesday it would acquire defense technology company Resonant Sciences for approximately $500 million. The deal is intended to expand Joby's technological capabilities as it continues developing advanced aircraft systems.

The acquisition reflects a broader evolution within the company. Joby has become one of the most closely watched developers of electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft, commonly known as eVTOLs, which are designed to take off and land vertically while using electric propulsion.

The technology carries an appealing simplicity in concept. Instead of following roads through increasingly crowded cities, small aircraft could potentially move passengers between designated landing sites above the urban landscape. Yet making that possibility practical requires advances in batteries, flight controls, autonomy and safety.

Resonant Sciences brings expertise in defense technology, adding another technological layer to Joby's existing aviation work. The approximately $500 million transaction shows that the development of future aircraft is increasingly connected to technologies originally developed for more specialized aerospace applications.

The acquisition also arrives during a period when the aviation industry is searching for alternatives to conventional transportation. Electric propulsion has attracted attention because it can reduce local emissions and potentially lower operating noise compared with traditional aircraft.

For passengers, however, the technology remains more distant than the image of an aircraft rising silently above a city might suggest. Commercial air-taxi operations require regulatory approvals, infrastructure, trained personnel and systems capable of operating safely in complex urban airspace.

Joby's strategy therefore extends beyond building an aircraft. The company has been working toward an ecosystem involving aircraft production, flight operations and the infrastructure needed to connect future air-taxi services with existing transportation networks.

The acquisition of Resonant Sciences adds another piece to that longer development process. Its value lies not simply in the size of the transaction, but in the technologies and expertise Joby expects to bring into its broader aviation program.

The future of urban mobility is rarely built in a single leap. It usually arrives through a sequence of smaller changes in engineering, infrastructure and regulation. Joby's latest acquisition represents one of those steps as the company continues pursuing electric aircraft and the possibility of commercial air-taxi services.

Joby said the acquisition is valued at about $500 million, marking a significant investment as it works to strengthen its technology platform. The transaction places another piece of advanced aerospace technology within the company's longer effort to develop electric aviation.
