Utrecht, Netherlands— Two drivers were hospitalized with severe injuries after a multi-vehicle collision shut down the A2 highway near Utrecht on October 22, 2026.
The crash happened at 7:10 a.m. in the northbound lanes between Nieuwegein and Utrecht Centrum. Three cars and a delivery van were involved. Police said a lane change in heavy commuter traffic triggered a sideswipe, then a spin, then two more impacts. One car hit the central barrier and overturned.
Rain had made the road slick overnight. Visibility was poor. The A2 was packed with morning commuters heading into the city. Drivers braked hard. Some could not stop in time. Metal crunched. Glass spread across 200 meters.
Control room cameras showed the pileup within seconds. Highway patrol and two ambulance teams arrived in eight minutes. They found one driver trapped in a crumpled sedan, unconscious, and another pinned in a van on its side, bleeding from the legs. Fire crews used spreaders to open both vehicles.
“People were out of their cars, waving, trying to stop traffic themselves before we arrived,” said a regional traffic officer. “Two vehicles were completely destroyed. It was a miracle more were not hurt.”
Both injured drivers, men in their 30s and 50s, were taken to University Medical Center Utrecht. Doctors listed one as critical with chest and head injuries, the other as serious but stable with multiple fractures. Two other drivers were treated at the scene for shock and minor cuts.
Rijkswaterstaat closed three lanes for almost two hours. The queue grew to nine kilometers. Commuters were rerouted via the A27 and A12. Tow trucks cleared the wrecks by 9:30 a.m. Debris crews swept the road for fuel and oil.
Police are examining dashcam footage from vehicles behind the crash. Early focus is on unsafe lane change and insufficient following distance. No alcohol or drugs are suspected. The delivery company said its driver is cooperating.
The file remains open. Traffic on the A2 returned to normal before noon, but the investigation continues.
