A Targeted Kidnapping, and a Network Still Being Mapped

There are crimes that unfold in the open and crimes that happen behind closed doors, and the latter often leave the deepest marks. Earlier this month, Calgary police received word that a woman was being held against her will in a residence in the southeast of the city. On October 13, members of the Tactical Unit executed a search warrant at the home on 37 Street S.E. They found the victim. They also found two men believed to be responsible, and a collection of items that told a story beyond the kidnapping itself.

The seizure list reads like an inventory of harm: a sawed-off rifle, a stolen motorcycle, numerous cell phones, approximately 607 grams of fentanyl with a street value of $60,700, 360 grams of methamphetamine valued at $7,200, and 850 milliliters of GHB valued at $4,250 . Police believe the kidnapping was targeted and drug-related . The woman was not a random victim; she was, in the language of the investigation, connected to the people who held her.

Two men have been charged. Joseph Richard Frederick Sarazen, 45, faces charges including overcoming resistance to commission of an offence, forcible confinement, assault, theft under $5,000, and three counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking. Jordan Barry Taylor, 36, faces the same charges along with possession of a prohibited firearm, possession of a firearm in breach of a court order, and unsafe storage of a firearm . Both are scheduled to appear in court in early November.

A third man is wanted. Dmetri Tyrone Cappo, 33, is described as approximately six feet tall, about 280 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes. He is wanted on warrants including forcible confinement, theft under $5,000, possession for the purpose of trafficking, and breach of a court order . Police have asked anyone with information about his whereabouts to come forward.

The presence of GHB in the seizure is particularly unsettling. The drug, often associated with incapacitation and sexual assault, was found alongside a sawed-off rifle and a significant quantity of fentanyl. The combination speaks to a context in which violence and exploitation are not abstract possibilities but operational tools. The kidnapping was not an isolated act of cruelty; it was embedded in a network of criminal activity that the investigation is still working to map.

For the woman at the center of this case, the raid on October 13 ended her confinement. What followed—the interviews, the evidence collection, the slow process of building a case against the men accused—is the machinery of justice, grinding forward. It is not swift, and it does not undo what happened. But it is the mechanism available, and it is being used.

The Calgary Police Service has asked anyone with information about the incident or Cappo's whereabouts to call 403-266-1234 or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers . The investigation remains ongoing. The two men in custody will have their day in court, and the third, if found, will have his. The woman who was held in that residence will carry her own account, one that no police release can capture.
