A Strategic Shift at the Edge of Space: L3Harris Sells Stake in Propulsion Unit

In the shifting tapestry of American aerospace and defense, even long-standing industry players periodically face crossroads where strategic focus meets market reality. One such moment has arrived for L3Harris Technologies, the major U.S. defense contractor that announced this week it will sell a controlling interest in its space propulsion and power systems business to AE Industrial Partners, a private equity firm specializing in aerospace and defense technologies.

Under the agreement announced on January 5, 2026, AE Industrial will acquire about 60 % of L3Harris’s Space Propulsion and Power Systems division — a portfolio of technology units whose combined enterprise value has been set at approximately $845 million. L3Harris will retain the remaining ~40 % ownership stake, ensuring it remains a significant partner in the business even after the deal closes, which is expected in the second half of 2026, subject to customary regulatory approvals.

The space propulsion and power business includes well-known assets such as upper-stage rocket engines used in national security and commercial space missions, in-space propulsion systems, avionics and power technologies — all developed across multiple U.S. facilities. However, the longstanding RS-25 rocket engine program, a key component of NASA’s Space Launch System for lunar missions, is excluded from the sale and will continue to be wholly owned and operated by L3Harris.

For L3Harris, the transaction marks another step in a broader strategic pivot toward focusing on its core defense and missile-oriented capabilities. By partnering with AE Industrial on the propulsion and space power segment, L3Harris aims to prioritize high-priority national security-related production while still maintaining a stake in the space technology’s future. The company’s leadership emphasized that the deal aligns with U.S. defense priorities and bolsters long-term value for shareholders and customers alike.

AE Industrial — already active in the space technology domain through investments in firms such as Firefly Aerospace, RedWire Space and York Space Systems — sees the acquisition as an opportunity to reinvigorate and expand propulsion technologies. The firm has indicated plans to modernize manufacturing and leverage the heritage of these systems, potentially including the use of the Rocketdyne name in connection with the business’s historic legacy in U.S. rocket propulsion.

Industry observers view this deal as part of a growing trend of portfolio realignment in aerospace and defense, where companies balance investments between civil space ventures and defense applications amid shifting government priorities and market dynamics. As the space economy continues to mature and private capital plays an increasing role in supporting advanced propulsion and exploration technologies, collaborations like this one may become even more common.
