A Pilot's Uniform, a Hidden Intent, and a Flight That Nearly Ended in Fire

There is a particular kind of darkness that hides behind the ordinary—a pilot's uniform, a routine flight plan, a manifest of passengers bound for a familiar destination. On September 30, that darkness revealed itself mid-air aboard a Flydubai flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv, when a co-pilot attacked the captain and attempted to seize control of the aircraft .

Early investigations have now revealed the alleged motivation behind that attack. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Omani national Hamam al-Hammami, told investigators that he had been inspired by the September 11, 2001 attacks and that the ambition to carry out a similar aerial assault drove him to pursue a career in aviation, according to UAE Attorney General Hamad Saif Al Shamsi . He allegedly planned to crash the Boeing 737 MAX into the passenger terminal at Ben Gurion Airport in Tel Aviv, aiming to inflict maximum casualties .

The suspect reportedly began to embrace extremist ideology in 2017 while studying in Australia, according to the prosecutor . He worked for several airlines in various countries before joining Flydubai in January 2026 . At the time of his hiring, he met all professional and security requirements, including holding a pilot's license and passing required background checks. "None of these procedures revealed any indications suggesting his extremist views," the prosecutor said . Before the incident, he had flown the Tel Aviv route twice specifically to familiarize himself with the flight path and airport .

The attack unfolded mid-flight over Jordan, near the Israeli border. Al-Hammami attacked Captain Smit Machchhar inside the cockpit, causing the aircraft to enter a steep descent . Despite his injuries, the captain managed to open the armored cockpit door to alert the crew and passengers . Passengers and cabin crew intervened to restrain the co-pilot, and an off-duty pilot on board assisted in regaining control of the aircraft . The plane made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, with all 182 people on board surviving .

The UAE prosecutor stated that al-Hammami claimed to have acted alone, without involvement from others, and that investigations are continuing to verify that claim . Reports have indicated that the suspect was previously dismissed from Oman Air due to extremist views before being hired by Flydubai . The Wall Street Journal reported that he had been barred from flying in his home country of Oman due to radical ideological beliefs .

The revelations have prompted scrutiny of aviation security vetting procedures. Counter-terrorism agencies in the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand are examining the suspect's background and travel history . Security experts have called for stricter vetting mechanisms and enhanced cross-border information sharing regarding pilot employment histories to prevent similar security failures .

An ordinary flight, a uniform, a route flown twice before—these are the elements that made the alleged plot possible. What the investigation has revealed is that the systems designed to catch such threats did not, and that the darkness was able to board the aircraft alongside 181 other passengers. The case continues, and the questions it raises about how aviation security verifies those entrusted with the controls will not be easily answered.
