A Park by the Bridge, and the Trust That Was Broken

There is a particular kind of park that belongs to childhood—the kind with a bridge nearby, water moving slowly below, paths that feel safe because they are familiar. Echo Point Park, tucked beside Roseville Bridge on Sydney's north shore, is that kind of place. It is also, according to police, the setting of something that should never happen to a child anywhere, in any season, under any circumstance.

A seventy-year-old man from Killara was arrested on Thursday and charged over the alleged sexual assault of a fourteen-year-old boy at the reserve in late 2023 . Detectives from North Shore Police Area Command began investigating in December 2025, roughly two years after the reported assault, following reports that a then-sixty-eight-year-old man had approached the teenager and assaulted him . Police do not believe the man and the boy knew each other, and are treating the incident as a random attack .

The arrest came with the weight of tactical police and a search warrant. Officers from the North West Metropolitan Operations Support Group raided the man's home on Thursday morning, leading him out in a T-shirt and track pants while general duties officers carried brown evidence bags containing seized electronic devices . He was taken to Hornsby Police Station and charged with three offenses: having sexual intercourse with a child aged between fourteen and sixteen, intentionally sexually touching a child aged between ten and sixteen, and inciting a child aged between ten and sixteen to perform a sexual act .

He appeared in Hornsby Local Court the same day, where bail was refused. He will remain in custody until at least November 4, when the matter returns to court . The devices seized from his home will undergo forensic examination, a process that may reveal more about the circumstances or may simply confirm what is already alleged.

For the boy, now several years older than he was in 2023, the legal process arrives with its own kind of weight. The delay between the alleged assault and the investigation—those two years—is not unusual in cases of this nature, but it does mean that whatever healing has occurred has occurred alongside the absence of formal accountability. The charges now bring the machinery of justice into motion, but they cannot undo what is alleged to have happened in a park by a bridge, in a place meant for ordinary afternoons.

The park itself will remain what it was. Children will still ride scooters along its paths. Families will still picnic near the water. That is the strange resilience of public spaces: they absorb what happens within them and continue offering themselves to whoever arrives next. But for one boy, and for the detectives who spent months building this case, Echo Point Park will carry a different memory—a reminder that random violence does not announce itself, and that the places we trust are sometimes the places where trust is broken.
