A neighbor cut down her tree to see a lake.

A Utah woman returned from a trip to find her neighbor had cut down her tree without permission, claiming it blocked his view of a lake. The neighbor has agreed to replace it.

A neighbor cut down her tree to see a lake.

There is something deeply unsettling about returning home to find that a piece of your world has been removed without your consent—not by storm or decay, but by the deliberate action of someone who lives just on the other side of the fence. For a woman in Utah, that unsettling discovery arrived after a holiday, when she came home to find that her neighbor had cut down her tree.

Sharing her story on TikTok, Reshgala explained that she and her family had been away when the tree was removed. Before their trip, the neighbor had asked if he could trim a few branches on his side that were floating over the property line. She agreed, on one condition: that she would be present when the landscaper came to do the work. "We were like, 'Yeah, sure. We can be here when the landscaper comes to do it'" .

They returned to find the tree gone. "So we just got home and our big beautiful tree, our neighbour chopped down so that he could see the view of the Jordanelle," she said, referring to a large man-made lake in Wasatch County . What made the act particularly difficult to understand was that the neighbor's own trees—described as 30 to 50 feet tall—remained standing. "My neighbours have trees that are 30 to 40 feet tall, or 50 feet tall, but they didn't cut them down," she noted .

The video, which she had intended only for close friends, has since amassed more than a million views. Commenters were quick to point out that tree law in the United States can carry significant consequences. "Tree law is real. Get a lawyer," one person wrote. Another added: "So my neighbour did this too and we took them to court and won $35,000" . In many states, timber trespass statutes allow plaintiffs to seek treble damages—three times the value of the lost tree—as a deterrent against boundary-line violations .

Reshgala later provided an update: the neighbors agreed to replace the tree. "All is good," she said . But the commenters' reactions reflected a broader unease about the quiet violation of property and the assumption that one person's view is worth another person's loss. As one commenter put it: "Time to buy a giant tree" .

For now, the tree will be replaced, and the matter resolved. But the story lingers as a reminder of how fragile the boundaries between neighbors can be—and how much weight a single tree can carry, both in memory and in law.
